The items in this archive tell a visual story of the air war - from Shipdham Airfield. Here, 5000 airmen took off on 343 missions over Fortress Europe. These photographs, letters, poems, and more capture life - in the air and on the ground. They've been painstakingly digitized over the last four years, and in the last year, uploaded here. Many of these items have never been publicly available - until now.

There are many ways to navigate the archive:

  • Search for something specific (an airman, a topic area, etc.)
  • Browse the 4000 items
  • Peruse the 60 collections, grouped thematically
  • Explore curated exhibits that take you through a day in the life of a WWII airman
