Formations in Air

Title

Formations in Air

Description

Heavy bombers flew in formation, mostly commonly in "the combat box" conceived early in the air war. It consisted of multiple 12-bomber groups flying in a box-like shape. Its smallest component was an element, a triangle of three bombers. The goal was to amass firepower and defensive strength against enemy attacks.

Formations began above base, and multiple bases linked together over East Anglia into a massive bomber stream.

Formation flying, while intended to provide additional protection, was also very dangerous. Mid-air collisions were common, especially in bad weather.
